BrestPort is working to accelerate its decarbonization efforts through the electrification of the Port of Brest

Prémurs du futur poste électrique

BrestPort is taking another step forward in its decarbonization strategy with the launch of the first phase of its ambitious program to electrify the Port of Brest.

Civil engineering work began in May 2026 with the construction of the initial infrastructure. A symbolic milestone was reached on June 8 with the installation of the prefabricated walls for the future electrical substation. It is scheduled for delivery in the summer of 2026, with launch planned for January 2027.

This new facility will be a key component of the port’s energy transition. It will enable the supply of different levels of electrical power to port users and significantly increase the site’s power supply capacity.

This project is receiving government support in the form of an 800,000-euro grant awarded to BrestPort under the France Relance plan through the Green Fund.

The project is intended to strengthen the connection between BrestPort’s private power grid and the public distribution network operated by Enedis. Once completed, the port’s connected capacity will quadruple, rising from 10 MW to 40 MW—equivalent to the electricity consumption of a city with a population of about 40,000.

This expansion will support the growth of port operations while reducing their carbon footprint.

A second phase of the project will begin in 2027. It will meet the growing needs of local shipowners, expand the electrical capacity dedicated to ship repair activities, and prepare the port for new regulations regarding shore power for ships at dock, which will take effect starting in 2030.

With this key investment, BrestPort reaffirms its commitment to the energy transition and the sustainable competitiveness of the Port of Brest.
